St. John of God Healthcare Services
Highlight of our History.

The present is here because of the past and the future will be because we recognize the present. The Brothers of St. John of God of the American Province are proud of their Hospitaller tradition throughout the world and especially here in Victorville, California.


St. John of God Health Care Services has, since 1985, provided a social model alcohol recovery programs in Victorville, California. The services offered cover a broad scope of individual and family needs. In the beginning this program consisted primarily of ALPHA House which was a recovery program of 12 beds. This was obtained by the Brothers of St. John of God when Victor Valley Counseling service requested that the Brothers who at that time were the sponsors of St. Mary Desert Valley Hospital take over the management of this Program.


On May 1, 1997 Starting Point an alcohol/drug rehabilitation facility for teenagers was dedicated Most Rev. Gerald Barnes, Bishop of San Bernardino Diocese presided over the Blessing Ceremony.

In May 1998, the former Sacred Heart Seminary on Palmdale Road was acquired by the Brothers to serve as a central location for all Adult Recovery Programs as well as Alpha Tots/Day Care. This property became part of St. John of God Healthcare Service. The land and buildings were purchased for the sum of $500,000. This debt was retired in 2003.


On December 17, 1999 the Mayor of Hesperia Dennis Nowicki at the City Council Meeting presented a Proclamation which commended St. John of God Healthcare Services for providing much needed Health Care Services for those struggling with addiction to the people of Hesperia and Victor Valley.


On December 22, 1999 St. John of God health Care Services received a HUD Grant for the continuum of care for homeless assistance for the sum of $935,879. The letter of award was from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development signed by Cardel Cooper Assistant Secretary.


At this time Pampuri Manor, a transitional living program for women in recovery and their children was initiated. The program was the first and only one of its kind in the area and was operated in collaboration with the San Bernardino County office of Alcohol and Drug Programs through the HUD grant with provided subsidies for the housing units. 


In 2005 St. John of God Healthcare Service assumes ownership and management of Good Samaritan Helping Hand a downtown Victorville Ministry to the Homeless. The SJGHCS Thrift Store moves to the same building.
